American Painter, 1823-1890 Cousin of Edward Hicks. After being apprenticed (c. 1835-9) in the sign-painting shop of his cousin, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia (1839-40) and at the National Academy of Design in New York (1840-44). He then sketched and painted in England, Italy and France before becoming a student of Thomas Couture in Paris (1848-9). On his return to the USA in 1849, he established a studio in New York and quickly became a popular portrait painter, although his portrayals only rarely have enough psychological depth to make them of more than documentary interest. Hamilton Fish (1852; New York, City Hall) is among his stronger works. Hicks also painted genre subjects, such as Musicale: Barber Shop, Trenton Falls (1866; Raleigh, NC Mus. Jehan Georges Vibert
Jehan Georges Vibert (30 September 1840 - 28 July 1902) was a French academic painter. He was born in Paris. He began his artistic training at a young age under the instruction of his maternal grandfather, engraver Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet. Vibert was more interested in painting than engraving and entered the studio of Felix-Joseph Barrias and eventually the École des Beaux-Arts when he was sixteen. He remained at the École for six years under the instruction of historic painter François-Edouard Picot. Vibert debuted at the Salon of 1863 with La Sieste (The Siesta) and Repentir (Repentance). During the Franco-Prussian War, Vibert became a sharpshooter and was wounded at the battle of Malmaison in October 1870. He was awarded the Legion deHonneur and became a Chevalier de la Legion deHonneur in recognition of his sacrifice. He became an Officer of the Legion deHonneur in 1882.

Cornelius Höyer, född 1741, död 1804, var en dansk målare. Höyer studerade dels i Köpenhamn, dels i Paris och Italien samt var redan 1769, då han återkom hem, en ansedd konstnär inom sitt fack, miniatyrmåleriet. 1770 blev han hovminiatyrmålare och medlem av konstakademien. Från 1777 var han dennas sekreterare.
